Not long ago, the words "You have breast cancer" were a death sentence in the United States and elsewhere. Many women whisper the words "breast cancer," which were taboo until First Lady Betty Ford became an advocate for patients after her diagnosis in the 1970s. Today, however, aggressive early treatment is an option for many women who wish to prevent the spread of the disease.
This book is a memoir of Professor K.I. Peeler's experiences while undergoing a double mastectomy with reconstruction and her recovery from the procedure in the fall of 2012 and spring of 2013.
This short book is both a personal tale and a guidebook for women who receive the devastating diagnosis. Though K.I.'s surgery lasted 9 hours and she experienced physical and emotional pain in the surgery's aftermath, she drew from her Zen practice and training as a sociologist to find humor, joy, and deeper meaning in the process. She came to view the experience as an opportunity to gain a new perspective on life and learn things that she would not have understood had she not been diagnosed with cancer.
K.I. Peeler was born in Japan and immigrated to the United States in her early twenties. She graduated from a state university in the Midwest with M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in sociology. She taught several sociology courses as a teaching assistant at her alma mater before landing a tenure-track job in the South.
As the memoir begins, K.I. goes to a breast center for her annual mammography in June, 2012, thinking that the test and its results will be routine. To her surprise, she is shown a digital mammography with white specks around her left nipple and also a density on her right breast.
Returning to the breast center for a biopsy several days later, she tests positive and is diagnosed with DCIS, ductal carcinoma in situ. Her DCIS is the size of sand - so small that there is not way she can touch or feel the growth. Luckily, it is Stage 0 cancer.
Having lost her best friend to breast cancer two years earlier, K.I. promised that she would undergo a double mastectomy if she were diagnosed. To K.I.'s surprise, her oncologist suggests not only a double mastectomy, but also reconstruction paid for by her health insurance. At the tender age of 54, as her breasts have started to sag a bit, obtaining a brand new set of breasts - boutique designer boobs- is almost like a dream come true. Thus begins a journey of surgery and healing.
K.I. writes vividly in vignettes that take place with her doctors, nurses, hospital staff, friends, colleagues, students, and neighbors. Being a sociologist, many of her accounts show a unique perspective on human experiences. The memoir is also peppered with K.I.'s experiences as a globe trotter; the reader will find stories taking place in the United States, Colombia, Canada, Japan, and Korea, among other places.
Rather than dwell on the sorrow of cancer diagnosis, this book aims to give readers mental and emotional tools to transcend the immediate pain and fear that surrounds their condition and treatment.

Boutique Designer Boobs and Zen How I Survived Breast Cancer and Stay Happy in America eBook KI Peeler

If one can say they enjoyed a work about breast cancer, this would be the work. Peeler tells the tale of her journey through illness, worry and ultimate triumph in a way that is both imminently readable and entertaining. Without a doubt she has excellent narrative skills. This is a book really not only for a breast cancer patient but anyone who has gone through traumatic surgery. Having been through a number of them myself, she validated so many of the thoughts and feelings I experienced. I feel better about my own surgical experiences having read this. It's an extremely well written book with such a meaningful message, which for me was the message of hope. What it will be for you? That will be for you to decide after you've read this wonderful story. I heartily and thoroughly recommend and endorse this great piece.

This is a journey through a book that will take you many places, introduce you to many people, and, most of all, will expose you to feelings that you just might not have known you had.
I can't imagine what it must be like to have a doctor tell me that I have cancer, let alone to have to go about planning for the surgery, recovery, and going about my life again - although this disease has touched the lives of several of my family and friends. Professor Peeler has written a wonderful account of how she dealt with her own bad news and how her own background in Zen Buddhism helped her maintain her equanimity in the face of a tremendous challenge. This is a deeply personal and moving account; well-written and well-told, and well worth reading.
Quirky, honest, and ultimately upbeat. The best thing to be said about this book is that the author is very frank and forthcoming with the facts about her breast cancer diagnosis and decision making process. Peppered with bit of sociology and a pinch of Zen wisdom, the professor gives a very accessible accounting of her mental, physical, psychological, and spiritual journey to attaining enlightenment and designer boobs. She takes readers with her through the mammography experience, breast cancer reconstructive surgery, and the joys and challenges of recovery at home and at work. From a patient's-eye-view, readers get to see what doctors fail to show-a glimpse into the nitty-gritty beyond the procedures. Your guide for this journey will be a Japanese fireball. Prepare to crash through the gates of ego and sit softly with the Smiling Buddha.
This is a wonderful book! It is a beautifully written story about surviving diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The author is a Japanese woman, professor, and educator, also passionate traveler who lives and works in US. There are two great things about this book first - it allows meeting an extraordinary woman. Every aspect of her life is full of passions, fun, and first of all, full of love and understanding of other human beings. Second - this is a fantastic educational book about what a woman can expect to happen to her during diagnosis, hospitalization, treatments and recovery from breast cancer. This is very important aspect of this book and that is why it should be "must" reading not only for breast cancer survivors, their family and friends but also for all women. Knowledge of details will decrease their fear of breast cancer. I would also recommend this book to doctors, nurses, administrators who work with breast cancer patients on daily basis. They do great job performing their routine work. It would be good for them to refresh their routine by reading such books as the " Boutique Designer Boobs and Zen How I survived Breast Cancer and Stay Happy in America" by K.I. Peeler.
This book provides you with a new perspective of one of the worst scenarios we might face today being diagnosed with a breast cancer. But the book is not only about cancer. It teaches you how you can always learn something, even in bad situations. How you handle those situations is all up to you and, in many cases, the people around you. Although the author shed many tears throughout her fearful ordeal, she shows a genuine and sincere approach to dealing with her breast cancer by reflecting on her life, admitting her need for help, appreciating her family and friends, and being thankful for every little thing that most of us take for granted, all the while trying to stay positive, taking each day at a time in a surprisingly humorous fashion. Being a sociology professor, she also looks at the situation and analyzes her experiences intelligently from an educator's point of view. The reader is drawn into the emotional roller coaster from the very moment K.I.Peeler hears the word "cancer," all the way until the end. Her energy will keep you reading as you find yourself engaged by her honest and humble attitudes toward everything and everybody. You will feel as though you're by the author's side throughout her quest to put her life back together and overcome this difficult challenge.

After reading this book, I feel optimistic in the sense that I too can gain something positive from whatever situation I am ever subjected to. K.I. Peeler's compassion for humanity and her zeal for life left a profound impression on me, and I sincerely believe she'll have a similar impact on others who read her story.

I highly recommend this book to all cancer patients, as well those with loved ones who have been diagnosed with cancer. In addition, I'd go ahead and recommend her story to anybody who would like to read a captivating account of a remarkably strong and loving woman. I appreciate her courage in sharing her story and am looking forward to her next book.
